EATING DISORDER ANOREXIA NERVOSA
“Anorexia nervosa can be defined as an eating disorder in which people consume the least amount necessary for survival because they are obsessed with being fashionably thin or they might illogically and unreasonably fear that they might gain excessive weight which will render their bodies shapeless and spoil their self-perceptions about their ideal figure. Anorexia affects females more than males, and nine out of ten people having anorexia are females. Anorexia simply means not having an appetite, and most individuals suffering from anorexia have not lost their appetites, but simply have limited their food intake for fear gaining excessive weight.

Anorexia is usually associated with a distortion of the way that individuals view themselves which is due to their illogical assessments of themselves and to subdue hunger pangs, these people usually indulge in too much smoking, excessive consumption of caffeine increased exercising and using too many diet pills. This ailment occurs because of extreme food constraints to the point of self-starvation resulting in excessive weight loss. There are currently two subtypes of anorexia nervosathe restricting type and the binge/purge type. Those who suffer from the restricting type of anorexia nervosa lose weight by over-exercising, whereas those suffering from the binge/purge type overeat and then try to achieve balance through purging.

The chief difference between the binge/purge type and bulimia nervosa is that those diagnosed with binge/purge type are below the required body weight according to their structure while those with bulimia nervosa have normal weight. The inception of anorexia begins in adolescence and it usually affects women because men usually do not think that a few pound of more weight will make any difference in their lives. Most of the people with anorexia consume very small quantities of food although they do feel hungry like everyone else. There are documented cases of women literally starving themselves and facing serious health issues or even dying when their bodies fail to ingest food because of being starved of food for too long.

People suffering from anorexia usually have psychiatric disorders as well, the most serious being depression as a side effect to their starvation routines. These are certain things in a person’s life that cannot be addressed with any amount of weight loss. People who are suffering from Anorexia Nervosa (AN) are usually those who do not feel comfortable in expressing their emotions because they feel that this would embarrass them because for them to show any expressive feelings would be to show weakness. Eating disorders are usually in evidence with people who are making conscious efforts to block their emotions and they think that food restrictions can help them to control their overt emotions.
