Students should choose their policy issue carefully to ensure that there is adequate information available(particularly with regards to points 2 and 3 in the assessment criteria). The best issue is one which is highly controversial! If you are not able to locate different view points on an issue, or a diversity of existing/proposed strategies which respond to the issue, then you should choose another issue with more readily available information. Students must choose their own policy issue area.

They are NOT allowed to explore the topic of same-sex marriage, as this topic will be used as the springboard for the assessment task preparation activities in Week 5. Students must write a policy analysis report. Within this report you must use the followingheadings: The problem: Briefly summarise the issue – what is “the problem?” 100 – 150 words View point 1 : Summarise, in your own words, a viewpoint being put forward about the issue.

When possible, name specific legislation or a policy document. 250 words – 300 words Stage in policy cycle: Identify at which stage of the policy cycle the issue is currently located and provide a rationale for this assessment. It should be noted that if students believe their issue is working across more than one point of the policycycle they are able to indicate this but must provide a clear rationale for their decision.

Demonstrate a capacity to analyse, relevant issues relating to the chosen issue. Shows evidence of good research skills (indicating that the student has canvassed a variety of relevant, current source material, documentation and opinion on the topic).
