1 Family Therapy Theories

The family that was chosen was the Simpson family. The Simpson family is one of the

main families in Springfield, as well as the protagonist family of The Simpsons (Mayor

Quimby). The Simpsons are a nuclear family consisting of married couple Homer and Marge and

their three children Bart, Lisa, and Maggie.

Homer and Marge had some up and downs in their relationship. One of the family

therapy approaches connected to the Simpsons is Narrative therapy. Narrative therapy is a

method of therapy that separates the person from the problem and encourages people to rely on

their own skill sets to minimize the problems that exist in their everyday lives (Good

Therapy,2018). Homer and Margie were very outspoken with each other, but sometimes they

agree to disagree. The two was their own therapies when things got bad they thought of positive

way to make it better.

Another family therapy approach that connected with the Simpson family is Systemic

Therapy. Systemic therapy is rooted from family therapy or something known as family systems

therapy. There are a number of family systems therapies that contribute to the current systemic

therapy concept (2017, Premier Mind Institute,Inc).The Simpson family went to family therapy

because the family was getting separated amongst each other. But the family didn’t need it due to

the fact they could work and disagreement with themselves.

Homer and Margie went through relationship counseling which begins usually when a

couple is trying to decide whether to work out their problems and continue to be together or if

they should move on. Which in this case the marriage couple thought it will help their marriage

since they both was going through a hard time. The couple had a couple of break ups that didn’t

last long, and they went through some counseling where they got to explain their problems and

work out the situations.

The last family therapy approach that connects with The Simpson Family is Structural

family therapy. Structural family therapy is a method of psychotherapy developed by Salvador

Minuchin which addresses problems in functioning within a family ((2017, Premier Mind

Institute,Inc). The Simpson Family went through structural family therapy base on the family

structure inside the home, which they are a working-class family. It shows their social

interactions between the parents and their children.
