This article describes how the United States Supreme Court, composed entirely of Bok Guey (Whites), adjudged Hon Yen (Chinese) to be in the same social classification as Lo Mok (Blacks). The author examines this case by using critical legal theory. This theory suggests that law reflects the material interests of the dominating class and expresses the concept of hegemony as described by the Italian Marxist theorist, Antonio Gramsci. The “Lotuses (Chinese) among the Magnolias (Mississippi)” refers to Chinese coolie labor migrating, at the request of the planter class, to the state to work in place of the freedpeople who became resistant to working without the aid of the lash. Furthermore, this article describes the class and racial conflict in Mississippi that occurred during Reconstruction. This conflict led to the planter class looking to Chinese coolie labor to replace their ex-slaves. “Let the coolie come” became the cry of the planter class who hoped that the Chinese, being non-citizens, would be more tractable, pliable, and complacent. Many of the coolie labor came from the area in China called “Sze Yap or Four Counties district of Canton in South China.” The Mississippi Chinese settled and became a third social class sandwiched between White over Black.
