Schizophrenia is a serious brain disorder that is characterized in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV-TF [APA], 2000) as “A mixture of signs and symptoms (both positive and negative) that have been present for a significant time during a 1-month period or shorter…with the disorder persisting up to 6 moths [Criterion A and C] (pg. 298). Schizophrenia severely impairs the individual’s ability to think a d/or control his emotions or make decisions. According to the National Association of Mental Illness, the first signs or symptoms occur in adolescent or teenage years, or the early twenties and can persist throughout life (www.nami.org). Adolescence is the developmental period of transition from childhood to early childhood. It is unknown exactly what causes schizophrenia; however, schizophrenia is reported to develop during puberty, and due to hormonal changes in the body. This developmental period takes place primarily during adolescence and young adult years (Schizophrenia in children and adults). Several factors are listed as contributing to the development or increase of Schizophrenia during this developmental period for the young adult including:
• A family history of schizophrenia or psychosis.
• Exposure to viruses, toxins or malnutrition before birth.
• Unusual immune system responses like inflammation or autoimmune diseases.
