There are two positions to consider in defining the adaptable nature of emotions:
Position 1
· Emotion is primitive, maladaptive brain function
. As we evolve, emotions recede and “cold” cognition become more important
. Eventually we’ll evolve to become more like Vulcans
Position 2
· Emotion is functionally adaptive brain function
. Emotion is an adaptive form of cognition in addition to “cold” cognition

Position 2 seems to be more in line with my experiences and probably many other people’s experiences as well.
