Cognitive therapeutic interventions have been used in assessment to conceptualize behaviors that focus on exploring schemas, problems feelings and behaviors (Archer, & McCarthy, 2005). The primary goal of cognitive therapy is to modify behaviors that lead to problems. Developments have been advanced in areas of Cognitive Therapy, and used to examine the role of irrational thinking in addictions and motivations (Fleischhauer, Enge, Brocke, Ullrich, Strobel, &Strobel, 2010).
A cognitive therapeutic approach is exemplified in the theoretical postulates of Ellis (1959). Ellis introduced Rational Emotive Therapy (REBT) as a form of therapy that examined irrational thoughts and beliefs. REBT Therapy is based on the assumption that human beings are born with a potential for “rational or straight thinking, or irrational or crooked thinking” (Corey, 2005). Ellis held that individuals function in the world by actively constructing their own reality.

REBT presents a view of human nature that is examined from the perspective of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that result in faulty thinking. A cognitive therapeutic approach is focused on individuals’ attitudes and how they form or develop. For example, Fleischauer et al (2010) examined the relationship between cognitive abilities and specific aspects of personality traits. From this perspective, as they note, the therapist concentrates on issues such as self-esteem, aggression, and how these variables interact with anxiety to induce stress in the individual.
