An important part of project success in international health is understanding the situation of the country/region and the current health problem that your project will be focused on. A situational analysis (or Environmental Analysis) involves a systematic collection and study of health and demographic data, study findings and other contextual information in order to identify and understand the specific health issue to be addressed.
It examines the current status of the health issue as well as the social, economic, political and health context in which the health issue exists. It also draws on relevant lessons learnt from previous projects conducted in the same country/region or on the health problem in order to inform future project design. By the end of this task, you should have an understanding of the current situation (extent and severity) of the health issue and an understanding
of the broad context in which the health issue exists.
Then for that country and topic, individually conduct a situational analysis that includes four key
components:
- Country Profile – relevant figures relating to population, demography, economy, general health indicators, health spending, inequality, health system challenges PLUS health indicators specific to your chosen topic
- Country health priorities and policies – summarise the current priorities from National Health Plans (or other related plans – eg. Development plans), Donor country health and development priorities for that country (choose one or two donors)
- Key stakeholders and roles relevant for this topic in the country (in general)
- Lessons learnt from other project work in this country/other similar countries that may be relevant to future project design
